Amendment 1 to the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations BS7671

Electricians may find this article useful as a reference to the 17th edition Amendment 1 changes to the UK Wiring Regulations BS7671.


The Electrical Wiring Regulations BS7671 now includes Amendment 1 to further harmonize with the European electrical IEC and CENELEC HD60384 standards. The Amendment 1 requirements came into effect from the 1st January 2012.

The main changes to the regs consist of:

A new numbering system
A new Section 444 for measures against electromagnetic disturbances and
Surge Protection Devices
Part 5 covering Prefabricated Wiring Systems
Part 6 introducing the new Electrical Installation Condition Reports
Part 7 includes new Special Locations for Medical and Operating and
Maintenance Gangways
Additional Appendices relevant to the latest changes
New Numbering System

The new regulation numbering system ending in 100,101 etc. has been introduced for 'UK only' national regs. For example regulations such as 553.1.100 regarding shuttered socket outlets would apply to the UK only.

Electromagnetic Disturbances

The new section 4, with details in Section 5 for SPDs (Surge Protection Devices), covers sensitive equipment that may be damaged by surges such as overvoltages and lightning strikes.

Prefabricated Wiring

Prefabricated wiring systems which are intended for permanent connection are covered in Section 5. Cables installed in ceilings and floors should be run to avoid damage from contact with building materials. Also all connections and terminations must be accessible for inspection and testing unless they are of a maintenance free type.

EICR

The biggest change to the 17th edition affecting many electricians is the new Electrical Installation Condition Reports. The EICRs are now to be used for compiling and submitting information in place of the old type Periodic Inspection Reports. The purpose of the EICR is to improve the standard of periodic reporting and make the reports easier for consumers to understand. The results of inspections have been given new observation codes and the schedule of inspections has been revised.

Additional Special Locations

Part 7 includes new Special Locations for Medical (710) and Operating and Maintenance Gangways (729). Medical locations is now segregated into 3 zones which are determined by the medical procedures to be carried out. The gangways section sets out the minimum distances between equipment such as switchgear and the fabric of the building.

Appendices

Amendment 1 includes 16 Appendices which reflect the additional content. Content from Appendices 11 and 12 has been moved to Appendix 4 Current Carrying Capacity and Voltage Drop.

Peterhof or the "Russian Versaille" will lift your spirits. The Grand Palace is set in sprawling parkland dotted with fountains in all shapes and sizes. It is yet another ancient residence of the Tsars.

London

The British capital has enough on offer for a month-long study trip. Unfortunately, this would mean having to pay for a month's worth of food and accommodation in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Instead of having to fork out a fortune, try to cram as much as possible into just a few days, such as visits to some of the city's free museums and historic attractions.

The Science Museum is an excellent centre for discovery that both boasts a fascinating permanent collection and hosts regularly changing exhibitions on topics from medicine to natural disasters.

History Is An Illusion All To Its Own - No Matter How Far You Dig Its Answers Are Mixed

I would submit to you that history is an allusion all to its own, and no matter how far you dig to study for answers, you will come up with mixed data, reports, and even recent history with eyewitnesses will show a completely perception based argument for either side. Indeed, it has often been said that the victors of history or wars, or the rulers of civilizations rewrite the history to make themselves and their legacy stand the test of time, but that doesn't make the reality so, you can't just change the actual history by writing something else down.

That's not to say you can't change the history books, we know that's been done in the past, we are doing it today. In fact we are doing it every decade by my estimation. If you doubt this, go to a used bookstore at any of the colleges, and buy one of those history books from last year. They aren't teaching the same things that they were when we went to school, and how long ago was that really, in historical terms? In fact, even the libraries are getting rid of the older books, trading them in and demanding newer books on the same topic, but the further you get away from the actual history, the further you get away from the truth as well. How does this serve the learner?

If we fail to study the actual history, or stop digging, we are dooming ourselves to repeat the very history that actually happened. That's not a good thing. In fact we are told that we must study our history so that we aren't doomed to repeat it, as the famous quote goes from Lord Acton. When we state things as factual, we need to be very careful especially when we talk about historical events. Unless we were there, we don't know, and even if we were there, we don't know what everyone was thinking, only what we were thinking at the time, and over time even those recollections have a tendency to be overwritten in our memories.

What Is An American?

The idea was introduced to the American colonists by the Iroquois: "No man should allow another man to be his master." It grew and was nurtured by the demands on individual responsibility implicit in carving out a civilization from the wilderness. Even as the colonists swore fealty to the King of England, the idea remained a gnawing, festering, and dissonant incongruity in the American psyche. Finally, in 1776, it burst forth in a pyrotechnic starburst of blasphemy that startled and is still startling the world.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,... That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,"

These words from the preamble of the Declaration of Independence could only have been perceived as incomparable arrogance by the Europeans of the time. These colonial upstarts were suggesting not only that they were equal to the aristocracy, but that governments could be "instituted" among men -- that they were not an incontrovertible feature of nature as they had always been. Furthermore, those governments instituted by the governed have no powers except those granted to them by the governed. These were inconceivable ideas in an era dominated by absolute monarchies. The notion that the subjects could dictate to the recipients of the divine right to govern was anathema. But there was more.

"... whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government,... "

So the People could not only make governments, they could destroy them and replace them if they so chose. A government was not something you must submit to, but an entity you could sculpt to suit your own particular needs. This was an extremely revolutionary idea in 1776. Then, to add insult to injury, the Americans actually put these radical heresies into practice.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Again, "We the People... do ordain and establish this constitution... ," not the aristocrats like Alexander Hamilton who inhabited America at the time, but the rabble -- the people. And that government was not created to rule them but to provide for their common defense and general welfare. The American government was to be a servant of the common people, appointed by them to do their bidding.

The Constitution of the United States is not only the birth certificate of America, it is the defining document of what it means to be an American. The Constitution says that the government belongs to us. We made it and we control it. It does not control us. And if it tries to, we have the right and, under the Second Article of the Bill of Rights, the means to abolish it.

An American believes in what might be called bottom up government. He rejects the idea that top down government is a manifestation of the natural order of things. To an American, sovereignty resides in the individual and a government is nothing more than a tool created by a group of individuals to serve their common needs. Nor are the powers of that government absolute; they are vested in it by the People, and the People may, at their discretion, modify or revoke those powers as they see fit. Furthermore, the people whom Americans allow to operate their government are not free agents, but are democratically elected servants of the People subject to recall and to criminal prosecution.

This introduces an awesome (and to some frightening) concept. You alone are responsible for your wellbeing and for your mistakes. But you are also responsible for your success! Nobody but you did it to you, and nobody but you can do it for you. This mind set, unique to America, has been responsible for making Americans the richest people in the world. Though we comprise only a fifth of the world's population, we own half the private automobiles in the world, we waste more food than many countries consume, and we take potable tap water for granted.

What Are the Different Types of Thermometers?

A thermometer is an instrument used to measure the temperature. It can measure the temperature of a body or even of air or atmosphere. On the other hand, although alcohol doesn't have so many advantages it can also be used as a thermometric liquid. For a given temperature, it expands more than mercury. While using it in thermometers it is usually dyed red or blue.

The ordinary thermometers used in chemical laboratories are usually mercury thermometers. Clinical thermometers also contain mercury. Meteorologists use 'maximum' and 'minimum' thermometers to record the highest and lowest temperatures of the day. It contains both mercury and alcohol

ii. Bimetallic strip thermometers:

A bimetallic strip thermometer consists of a strip of two different metal's having different co-efficient of expansion. The two metals are usually brass and Invar. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, while Invar is an alloy of iron and nickel. The two strips are joined together. When the temperature changes, the two metals expand and contract at different rates because of different co-efficient of expansion. This causes the strip to bend. The strip is attached to a pointer, which indicates the temperature.

Bimetallic strip thermometers are used in refrigerators for temperature control. They are also used in thermometer. A the thermometer records a graph of temperature. Instead of a pointer, a pen is attached to the bimetallic strip, which records the temperature on a moving chart. The chart of the temperature is called a thermo gram.

iii. Electrical thermometers:

There are two common forms of electrical thermometers: 1. resistance thermometer and 2. thermocouple thermometers.

A resistance thermometer works on the principle that the resistances of metals increase with the rise in temperature. A resistance thermometer consists of a sealed tube containing tightly-coiled platinum wire. As the temperature increases, the resistance of the platinum wire also increases. By measuring the resistance, the temperature is determined.

A thermocouple thermometer consists of wires of two different metals. One of the junctions of the wires is kept in ice and the other with the source whose temperature is to be measured. Thermocouple changes heat into electricity and produces a voltage known as thermo e.m.f.. The voltage varies according to temperature. The voltage is applied to a galvanometer needle and the galvanometer needle shows the current which is calibrated in terms of temperature.

iv. Gas thermometers:

In these thermometers, gases like air, nitrogen, hydrogen, and helium are used as thermometric substances. These thermometers are of two types: 1. constant volume thermometers and 2. constant pressure thermometers. They work on the principle that gases expand on heating. By recording the expansion of gas, the temperature is measured.

Now the question arises, what are the different scales of temperature during use?

There are four scales of temperature 1. Celsius scale 2. Fahrenheit scale 3. Reaumur scale and 4. Absolute scale of temperature. The Celsius or Centigrade scale has 0° as the freezing point of water and 100° as the boiling point of it. Fahrenheit scale has 32° as the freezing point of water and 212° the boiling point. Reaumur scale has the 0° as the freezing point of water and 80° the boiling point. Absolute scale has 273°as the freezing point of water and 373° as the boiling point. -273° Celsius is the lowest temperature which has not yet been achieved. This is also called absolute zero.

The Evils Of Child Exploitation

Poverty is a very, very bad thing. Material, moral or ethical, whatever shape it comes in, poverty is dangerous. Poverty spawns discontent, envy, oppression, and more pertinently, desperation. It is a fact that 95 percent of all crime stems from one sort of poverty or the other; child exploitation is no different.

Moral poverty will lead an adult to abuse a child in any way: sexually, physically, psychologically, basically, all manner of abuse. No one with milk of human kindness in them will harm children who happen to be the most vulnerable members of our society. In Austria, recently, it was revealed that a man had locked up his own daughter in what amounted to a dungeon and systematically raped the poor child thousand of times over the decades, starting from when she was 11, and had in fact fathered eight children by her. This case is so shocking the mind can barely come with a why. My people have a saying that a man who has relationship with his own child is like a dog which vomits something and then goes back to eat it. What will motivate someone, who can only in the loosest term be called a human being, to behave in such a desperately manner? Moral poverty. When one loses the quality that makes one human, that person is no better than the animals which roam the forests.

By now you don't need to be told that exploitation is quite simply, to use unfairly for one's advantage. The range of abuse inherent in child exploitation is so wide and varied that it is hard to come up with a definition. For instance, there is the issue of child soldier in the war-ravaged parts of the world. Also child exploitation is the hydra-headed matter of child trafficking.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted in 1989. It proclaims that all children have the right to survival, the rights to food, the rights to family, the rights to cultural and indigenous identity and the right to education. These are the basic rights of every child, but the implementation is sadly deficient. Children are the future - there's no argument. You only get out what you put in. Sow the right seeds in the children in the children and they will grow up mentally, morally and totally balanced to sustain the world tainted by the shadows of residual trauma of bad childhood.
